Avoiding Exterior Damage to Your Home Throughout the Minnesota Seasons

The seasons that we go through here in Minnesota can do some damage on the outside of a home. We seem to get harsh weather and severe storms year round. And that weather can take a toll on the outsides of our homes.

It is important that a Minnesota homeowner consider the damage that can be done and find ways to avoid having any accidents happen. There are some great tips out there so you can feel comfortable and confident that your home is protected while sitting inside.

Protective Exterior Home Maintenance By Season

Autumn: When fall hits, you want to prep and protect the exterior of your home for the harsh winter ahead. The number one thing you want to do is clean out the gutters. The debris that is hiding in the gutters should be removed so that ice dams don’t develop and ruin the roof.  If you haven’t done that yet, the good news is you still have time.  It looks like the daytime temps are going to stay above freezing, at least for the next week or so. This is probably one of the most important things you can do to protect your home.

Winter: The biggest problem that homeowners have during the colder winter months is ice and snow build-up on the roof. By removing any ice and snow accumulation throughout the winter months, you are essentially protecting your roof  (as well as the rest of your home) from damage that the winter can cause.  Before you start removing snow from your roof, do some homework on the safest way to do it.  There are methods that can actually damage the roof. And if you’re not comfortable handling it yourself, hire a professional.

Spring: Clean out your gutters to remove winter debris. This is also a good time to wash your siding and windows as well as do any exterior painting or staining. Trim trees, especially any branches that might be hanging over your home. Inspect your siding and roof for winter damage.  Cleaning moss, lichen, and mold off the roof during this time is recommended so that you don’t worry about having this damage your shingles.

Summer: This is the perfect time to evaluate your attic insulation as well as ventilation.  This is going to help the home breathe and allow the central air to work easier and reduce the amount you pay in your electric bill. Without this ventilation in the attic, you can find that the temperatures inside your home reach extreme levels. A hot attic can also cause your roof to age prematurely.

It is important that the home renovations and remodeling are done through a reputable, licensed Minnesota home remodeling contractor.
