Choosing Minneapolis Exterior Doors: Basic Tips

Considerations for Choosing Exterior Doors for Your Home

The first place to start when choosing new exterior doors (entry doors, patio doors, and storm doors) is to take a look at what you already have.  Make a list of what you like and what you don’t like about the existing ones.  Then consider these tips:

• You aren’t limited to the existing door style.  In fact, many homeowners we work with are opting for double French style patio doors instead of the traditional sliders.  Have double entry doors but not much light in your entryway?  Perhaps one entry door flanked on either side by sidelight windows would work better.  Check out the ProVia entry door shown here.  The art glass sidelights coordinate with the door glass.  Obscuring glass lets in plenty of light without sacrificing privacy. 
• Consider function.  What a door’s main purpose is and how you will use it most often are probably more important than any other elements.  The best door is one that serves the purpose well. 
• Make a list of your priorities.  For example, if security is your biggest concern, then a steel or fiberglass door would be a better choice than wood or vinyl. 
• Finally, make a note of your budget.  Keeping in mind how much you’re willing to spend is important.  Whether you’re financing (check out our financing options) or paying up front, your budget will be one of the guiding factors in choosing the right doors for you and your home. You may find some doors you really like, but if they cost more than you’re comfortable spending, cross those off the list.  While replacing your exterior doors is a long-term investment that will eventually pay for itself over time in increased home value as well as savings on utilities if you choose energy efficient doors, spending more than you intended to means you may not be happy with what you chose.
