Difference Between Tilt-Turn and Hopper Windows

How well do you know your window styles?

As professional window replacement installers, we have had the pleasure of helping many customers choose what windows would be best for their homes or businesses. Two of the less common types of windows we carry are tilt-turn and hopper.

Keep reading to find out more about these two window styles and how they might work in your home.

Tilt-turn windows are a common find among European houses, but they’re rapidly growing in popularity among homeowners in the states also.

Tilt-turn windows have two functions:

  • The top of these can open, and
  • They can be opened up in the same way casement windows do

A lever controls these two actions, and within the window’s frame their mechanism is held in place.

If you’ve got children, this window might give peace of mind, since they can’t fall through when it’s opened from the top. When opened up in the same way casement windows do, maximum amount of air can pass though into the room.

These windows work great in several business and residential settings. Some rooms where they work well, are in a pool enclosures or sun room. The dual functionality of these windows gives you lots of versatility in how you use them.

All over the United States these basic windows are seen. The majority of them are installed in bathrooms or basements. Hopper windows allow for superb ventilation, helping enclosed rooms from becoming damp or too stuffy.

These windows have their hinge on the bottom and open inward on the top. They only require a small amount of hardware for operation and installation. Pulling the window handle opens it, and turning it unlocks or locks hopper windows.

There is almost no effort needed when cleaning these windows from inside, due to the screen being installed outside.

With hopper windows opening inward, if exterior grates need to be installed for security, this is easily done. However, because of this feature of opening inward, window treatments such as blinds are difficult pairing with them.

Hopper windows come in two basic styles – the single pane hopper window, or a hopper window with a fixed upper section, similar to a single hung.
