Early Minnesota Winter Maintenance Tips for Your Windows and Doors

Are your windows and doors ready to protect the inside of your home against winter’s cold?  Now that we’re well into this season, hopefully they are.  You can be losing up to 23% of your energy if you do not properly maintain the windows and exterior doors. When the cold months hit in Minnesota, this can leave the inside of your home feeling drafty and cold. So what do you do? Turning up the furnace is often people’s reaction. But that’s not the solution. Be aware that the majority of heat loss in a home is through window and door openings. So any steps you take to cut down on that will make a major difference, both in your budget and your comfort.

Taking the right steps now will help you overcome the costs of paying to heat your home during the cold months. Know what signs to look for that your windows and doors are not as effective as they should be.

  1. Look for cracks, breaks, or openings around the windows and exterior doors of your home. Run your hand around the entire frame. Do this on a cold day so you can feel around these areas for any cold drafts that might be coming through. You’d be surprised at how even a small hairline crack can let air in (or out).
  2. If you do notice a draft, then you can try to use weather stripping if it is towards the bottom of the window or door. If it’s substantial enough, you may need to replace that window or door.
  3. Clean the windows in your home to allow the natural light to flow through. This is especially important when the days get shorter and it gets colder. Not only will it be a little more cheerful indoors but the sun shining indoors can warm up the room.
  4. If the windows in the home are very old, breaking down, and not as reliable as they used to be then it might be time to replace them and get new ones that won’t let the cold inside.

Not sure if your windows can make it through another winter?  Then it’s time to think about having our replacement window professionals come out to assess them can give you more information on the options that you have.
