Fiberglass Windows – 3 Things You Should Know

Have you heard the buzz about fiberglass windows lately?

We recently added Beechworth fiberglass windows to our already extensive line of quality window products, and with good reason.  What once was considered a niche product is now, in fact, the platinum standard for new windows.

By consumer standards, it is said that fiberglass has a ways to go before it will catch up to vinyl or wood windows. Yet, by industry standards it is said that fiberglass not only caught up with these other types of windows but has surpassed them in the replacement window market.

Fiberglass windows not only replace your current old windows more efficient but they upgrade your entire home.  Here are just a few benefits:

  • The resale value of your home will in fact go up.
  • While vinyl windows are almost maintenance free, fiberglass windows ARE maintenance free.
  • Fiberglass windows can deliver charming and traditional look many home owners are looking for, but without the care required for solid wood windows.

Not every window is for everyone or even every home, but fiberglass windows just may be that compromise that many homes need in order to keep their charm and still be able to upgrade to today’s standards.

Due to the fact that fiberglass windows have been installed on relatively few homes compared to wood or vinyl, you may have some questions about this material. Here you will find answers to the most commonly asked questions about fiberglass windows.

Do fiberglass windows need to be painted?
Since fiberglass itself does not fade, it is the finish on the fiberglass that may fade.  While it is true that most fiberglass products do fade over time, this is not true with fiberglass windows. What causes fiberglass products such as car parts, ladders, and boats to fade is not the fiberglass itself – it is the gel-coat finish. This finish looks fabulous when it is first applied, but over time the finish begins to fade. Fiberglass windows are not gel coated; they have an acrylic mechanically bonded finish which provides prolonged color retention so that it will never fade.

Are fiberglass windows strong?
You may hear things such as the strength of a window’s material does not matter or that fiberglass material is brittle. The truth of the matter is, strength does matter, and fiberglass windows deliver exceptional strength and durability. It is eight times stronger than vinyl and three times stronger than wood. The strength behind the framing material is what in fact keeps it maintenance free and functioning year after year. Unlike vinyl and wood windows, fiberglass windows will not contract and expand.  That lack of expansion and contraction is what keeps the glass panes stable and prevents air leakage.

Fiberglass windows and insulating a home
Due to the fact that fiberglass does not contract or expand the way vinyl or wood windows do, it eliminates any possibility of the outdoor elements from creeping through cracks. While wood as well as vinyl windows have to be welded in the corners, fiberglass windows are installed by a mechanically fastened glass reinforced corner key. The key is injected with a hot melted sealant in order to ensure a waterproof seal that will not leak.
