Always inspect strings for damage and replace missing or burnt out lights to minimize fire risk but don’t mix bulbs. If the string doesn’t work, try changing the fuse in the male end. If it goes out again, throw it away.
Avoid nails or staples when decorating and use an outlet with a ground fault interrupter. For longer lasting lights, consider LED. This type of bulb burns cooler and runs less risk of blowing when more than two strands are strung end to end.
When putting up lights on the exterior of your home, make sure you use lights specifically rated for outdoor use.
