Home Damage That Can Occur Throughout a Minnesota Winter

01jan22d4a15Any home that is going through winter can suffer the damages that come with it. This is especially true of homes here in the Minneapolis area.  Twin Cities’ harsh winters are really hard on people, but the same is true for buildings.  Winter weather can do a number on your home and even cost you more money in the long run. By protecting yourself and your family with having additional money put aside, you’re able to have the repairs and upgrades done that are required before another long, harsh winter comes knocking.

Winter Moisture Damage

The effects of moisture build-up throughout a home from the walls to the roof to the foundation can cost thousands to repair. The goal of siding, roofing and other materials is to keep this moisture from entering the home. But if you’ve got damaged siding and roofing on your home, or even gutters that are not properly working, it’s allowing water to back flow into the home, to cause the moisture to come knocking where it is not supposed to be.

Bricks, Stucco and Siding Can Be Affected by Winter Weather

Some of the bigger problems that you can notice with these types of siding are staring right at you, while others might be harder to notice. Stucco can have cracks that will need to be sealed, while bricks usually are okay with good washing, but if they are crumbling then they need to be sealed for quality. Missing mortar can cause issues as well.  Vinyl siding can cause problems if sections of siding are pulling away from the home or have cracks.  If you notice missing or loose siding, don’t ignore it – even in winter.  Siding damage should be repaired as soon as it’s noticed.

Winter can cause other problems with a home, too – frozen pipes, gutters bent or torn off from built-up ice, roof damage from ice dams, etc.  The good news is that any damage can be minimized by making repairs quickly.
