How Can I Tell If I Need to Replace My Windows?

Window replacement is one of the most common exterior home improvement projects in the greater Minneapolis area, and with good reason.  Having newer energy-efficient windows that fit snugly in their openings in installed is one of the best ways to cut down on your heating and cooling costs.  As most energy experts will tell you, the greatest amount of heat loss (and cooling) is around window openings.  (Door openings are the #2 spot, so if you’re replacing your windows, you may consider having new doors installed at the same time.)

But how do you know if your old windows need to be replaced?  If you’re asking the question, one way is to have a professional Minneapolis window replacement company like ours evaluate your existing windows.  But there are certain things that can also indicate it’s time for new windows.

Some Signs That Your Windows Need to Be Replaced

There are obvious things like cracked glass or windows that won’t open (or stay open) that indicate it’s time for new windows.  We’ve covered many of them in the past.  But here are a few other indications you might not be aware of:

  • Curtains, shades or blinds move even when the window is closed. If you’ve ruled out ghostly inhabitants, movement of window dressings when the windows are closed means air is leaking in.  And if outside air is coming in, it’s also going out.  So you’re wasting heating or cooling.
  • You notice an abundance of small insects indoors. Unless your kids are leaving the door open, seeing small insects flying or crawling around indoors could mean failed windows.  When windows no longer fit tightly in their openings, even the smallest gap provides a way in for gnats, mosquitoes, and even flies.
  • Noise from the outside seems to be getting louder. This is one a lot of people don’t even think about as being connected to their windows.  Properly fitting and well insulated windows should do more than just keep the outside air from coming in – they should reduce the amount of outside noise infiltration.   A second reason might be that the activity level in your neighborhood has gone up.  And while your old windows might not be at fault, you CAN do something to cut down on that noise by replacing your old windows with ones that do a better job at keeping the noise outside.
  • You cringe when you look at your windows. Feeling like it’s time to refresh the appearance of your home is a very valid reason to replace your windows.   How your home looks to you is an important factor.

If you’ve checked off one or more of these signs, we’d love to talk with you about how newer energy-efficient replacement windows could solve your issues.  We pride ourselves on working with each customer to find the perfect window solution for them and their home.  Why not reach out to us to schedule a no-obligation consultation?  We offer in-person meetings in your home, a private appointment at our window and door showroom in Savage, or a virtual meeting.  Just let us know what you’d prefer.
