How to Accomplish Home Maintenance Goals

Most of us start our new year with a list of resolutions. However, many of those resolutions go uncompleted, not because we’re lazy or dishonest with ourselves, but because of the lack of plan.  Many of those resolutions involve home maintenance. These unfinished projects can be a source of stress for homeowners, but still go unfinished.  The problem lies in that we don’t think about the process of getting the goal done in a logical way. When you write it down, it shouldn’t head the page, but instead should be at the bottom. Before the goal, there should be a series of steps which will result in completion.

First Step in Home Maintenance:  The Plan

One of the best ways to accomplish these goals is to set a plan in place. When you look at it as a large mass of steps, it’s a little too overwhelming and many people decide to put it aside until they feel they have the time and energy to do something about it. One way to tackle this problem is to make up the “yeah, but” list. This entails writing the goal down, then listing the reasons that are holding you back in a “yeah, but” format.

For instance, if you’ve wanted to install new windows for years but haven’t yet, write that down at the bottom of the sheet. Perhaps one of your reasons for not completing this task is that you still need to find a contractor.  In this case, write down, “Yeah, but I need to find a good contractor.” Underneath that, jot the solution down, in this case, that would be, “Find a good contractor.”

Next, write down why you haven’t done that yet. Perhaps it’s because you haven’t gotten around to calling an acquaintance that had the great remodeling outcome. Do the same thing that you had with the first reason, and then write the solution. Continue the cycle until you reach the goal.

In essence, you’re tricking yourself into establishing a plan of action. In the process, you find smaller jobs to finish. This has the double benefit of completing your resolution and giving you a concrete reason to get other projects done.
