Increase Energy Efficiency by Sealing Air Leaks

Little air leaks add up to become big energy cost problems. Often window and door openings are a major culprit. Bob Villa offers tips to solve these problems in this blog entry. He also provides links for further information at the bottom of the page.

Cracks big and small should be sealed to keep a home’s temperature regulated year round. For interior leaks around windows, outlets and ducts, foam sealants, weather stripping and caulking work well. When it comes to exterior leaks where different materials meet, like chimneys or spigots, spread on some caulking.

Big gaps call for expandable polyurethane foam, but don’t use too much of it. This foam can over expand and produces greenhouse gasses. For an option for small gaps that won’t over-expand, consider water-based expandable foam.
