Invest Wisely in Home Remodeling: Choose Projects That Add Value

If you’re considering remodeling your Minneapolis area home, a very important aspect is how that project will affect the value of your home.   Believe it or not, there are some types of renovation that can actually lower the value of your home.   A good example is an in-ground pool.  Unless you live in a development where pools are the norm, this is one thing that can decrease the value of your home.  If you enjoy swimming, better to buy a membership at a gym with a pool.  And nowadays, the open floor plan is a drawback.  Once very popular, large open spaces are now looked at as a drawback.  If your planned remodeling involves tearing out walls, we suggest you re-think your ideas.

If you really like the idea of open space, there are things you can do with doors and windows that can give the illusion of an open space.  For example, floor to ceiling glass lets in plenty of light, so your space seems bigger.  You might also opt for a wall of bi-fold or French patio doors that lead to your outside living area; that can also open up an area.  (note how the French doors shown here from ProVia invite you to step out on the deck for fresh air!

Both of these projects will add value to your home, especially if you choose energy-efficient replacement windows and exterior doors.  Any type of project that increases a home’s energy efficiency should add value.  Another plus of projects like this is that you’ll save money over time on heating and cooling expenses.  And if doors and windows add more glass area, you could also save on electricity by reducing the need for having lights on during the day.

Whenever you tackle a home improvement project that adds value to your home, you’re actually making an investment rather than it being just an expense.  If you’d like to learn more about how replacement windows and/or energy-efficient exterior doors can do that for your home, contact us today for a free consultation.
