Is Your Minneapolis Home Looking Dated? Consider Starting with Replacement Windows & Doors

As we drive through some of the neighborhoods in the Minneapolis area, we’re struck by the number of beautiful, stately older homes.  There are sections of the city – as well as others in the Twin Cities metro – that consist mainly of historic or other older homes, and most of them have the enduring, timeless appeal they had when they were built.  But there are other neighborhoods where it’s clear the homes have seen better days.  A look that was popular in the 60s and 70s just looks outdated now. Recently Marvin’s ‘Inspired’ blog featured some transformations of homes by a virtual design firm, Brick & Batten.  The before and after photos shown below show just one of several projects.

You’ll note that a number of other things were done to this home other than new windows and doors, but it’s often a good idea to start with those elements and then work to complement them with siding, masonry accents, and other exterior changes. (By the way, we particularly love the stone accents on the foundation and pergola pillar bases. We’ve installed Versetta Stone® cultured stone panels like this for a number of homeowners in the Twin Cities. It’s a great way to finish off an exterior.)

Why start with the windows and doors and not another element like siding?  Mainly because the windows and doors of your home are the first thing that catch your eye, so choosing the right ones for the look you want will allow you to add in other things that will go well with them rather than detract.  It’s also advisable if you will be making any changes to the window or door openings; otherwise you may need some additional siding work if you opt to do that first and then windows and doors later.  Also, the style of window you choose will influence your choices of trim and other accents like the shutters shown here.  Notice how the owners replaced their existing plain windows with those that have divided light (the grids)?  The trim and even the pergola structure then worked off the window style.

If your home needs a new look, we’d love to work with you to give it a fresh appeal.  Historic and older homes are our specialty, and we can help you transform yours. Why not contact us today for a free consultation?  There’s no obligation, and we can come up with a number of window and door ideas that can give your home’s exterior a whole new look.
