Minneapolis Homeowner Asks: What Is the Best Style Window for a Home Office?

Work and school life has changed for so many of us, not only here in the Minneapolis area but all across the country.  Working and schooling from home – once a rarity – have become commonplace.  In fact, the most recent estimates show over 40% of us are telecommuting, as they used to call it. And a third or more of school age students are getting their education remotely.  Add to that the families who have opted to home school in the face of uncertainty and those who have started up home-based businesses to make ends meet, the home office is now becoming a necessity instead of a luxury.  And whether you’ve converted one of your rooms to an office or simply transformed a corner of another space, the right windows for that home office can make all the difference.

So, if you’re replacing your windows, you may be asking yourself what the best window style is for an office space in your home.  Several different ones may work, but here are considerations as you’re making your decision:

Choosing Windows for a Home Office

  • Windows that maximize natural light should be at the top of your list.  Studies show that lighting influences mood and performance, and even the best electric lights can’t compete with the benefits of genuine sunlight.  Insufficient light can cause eye strain, leading to headaches and irritation.  Sliders and casement windows generally offer the most visible light, but keep in mind that window frame size matters as well.  Fiberglass windows, such as those we install from Marvin, tend to have thinner frames and thus let in more light than another type of frame in the same size opening.
  • Thinking about the most natural light might make you think perhaps a picture window would be the best.  But if you chose a fixed window you’ll be missing out on a second consideration:  the ability to enhance air flow. A burst of fresh air can be just the pick-me-up you need when you’re feeling fatigued. Here’s another area where a casement window out-performs other window styles. Since the windows open out, they can catch and direct breezes, thus providing better ventilation than other window styles. And their ease of opening means you can have that air flow in a moment.
  • Look for windows with clean lines and little ornamentation.  You don’t want anything that might distract you or your children while you’re working.  That means you might want to skip the divided light or window grids. Those window accents might provide a decorative appeal, but they also require more upkeep. Dust settles on those dividing strips, and you want a window that will help you keep your work space clean and uncluttered.
  • Maintenance-free windows are a must!  Windows that are the easiest to clean and require the least amount of attention are what you should be looking at.  You have better things to do with your time these days than taking care of your windows.
