North, South, East, West: How to Choose the Right MN Replacement Windows Depending on Direction

CompassIf you’re shopping for replacement windows for your Minneapolis home, it’s important consider the many specifics that go along with choosing the best windows to install in your home. This is essential, since the windows should match well with the look of the home overall. While you want your windows to produce a harmonious and unified look, what works well is if the different sides of the home should have windows with either different styles or different features.

East Facing Windows

The morning sun comes through your windows on this side of your home. If you want an open, airy feeling throughout the home, then placing larger, more open windows are ideal for this side of the house.  If you’re a late sleeper and the east side of your home doesn’t get much daytime use, you might want to consider just the opposite.

West Facing Windows

When you place larger windows in this part of the home, you can have a beautiful view of the sun setting, but you also can have a lot of afternoon heat coming in. This heat can be ideal for winter months but not for summer months. The windows that are placed in this side of the home should have double panes and be as energy-efficient as possible.  Window coatings that cut down on heat transference are also helpful for west-facing windows. If your western exposure has a beautiful view, consider installing a picture or bow window to maximize the viewing area.

North Facing Windows

North facing windows don’t get direct light, so are able to have a soft glow illuminate the home. There is no need to worry about the heat that comes in either, since the north side of the home does not get a lot of direct sunlight. The winds that blow in might be an issue. You want glass that is strong and have no leaks.  Here in Minnesota with our cold winters and high winds, installing triple-pane glass on northern exposure windows can significantly improve both comfort in your home and energy efficiency.

South Facing Windows

The south is the one place in the home that people enjoy adding extra windows to. They like to line them up and open the area out with sunlight and fresh air.  This is also a great place for large glass panels and picture window configurations.  House plants flourish in southern sunlight, and so do people, especially in the winter.  The southern side of the house is perfect for a garden window or a bay or bow window where you can put your plants.  Does your home get too much southern light in an area?  Balance the sunlight and air out by planting small trees or shrubs near the windows which can diffuse some light and air.
