Now Is A Great Time to Take Stock of Your MN Exterior Doors

Summer has finally arrived here in the Minneapolis area, and with it lots of in-and-out through those front, side, and patio doors.   With the nice weather and outdoor entertaining, you may have more guests coming over, so it’s a good time to evaluate your exterior doors.  Your exterior doors – most often your front door – are where you greet your visitors.   And your front door is what really gets noticed from the street.  What do your doors say about who lives inside?

If you’re like many homeowners in the Minneapolis area, you may not give those doors a second thought – chances are you go in and out of your home through the garage.  But now is the time to take a good, hard look at those doors to see how they’re performing.

  • Do a visual inspection.  Step away from your home and observe it from a distance, as a visitor would.  Do the doors look welcoming and inviting?  Does the area around each door look well-kept?  Turn on the exterior lights to make sure they work, and check out things like the condition of the paint and stain. Doors which get a lot of full sunlight tend to fade, so pay attention to the finish.  Also, wood doors that aren’t protected either by an overhang or a storm door may blister, crackle, or peel from moisture.  Check for dents, scratches, or cracks in the wood.
  • Open and close each door.  Give the knobs and locks a good turn to make sure they work well. Do they stick or are they easy to open and close?  What about your patio door – does it slide smoothly in its track?  Check the security of the locks as well; make sure your home is securely closed up when you’re not there.
  • Check the fit.  With A/C season in progress, it’s also a good time to make sure your doors fit well and that there’s no air gaps around them.  Air leaks around exterior doors mean cooling bills (as well as heating bills in the cold months) that are higher than they need to be.

So how did your doors fare in your inspection?   It may be time for a facelift, like applying a new coat of paint, sprucing up the landscaping around the door, or polishing the hardware, but if your doors don’t fit well, stick, and have deteriorated, it may be time to consider replacements.

At Window Outfitters we offer a whole lot more than windows.  Replacement exterior doors are one of our specialties as well.  We’ve got a full line of entry, patio, and storm doors in a variety of materials – from traditional wood to durable fiberglass – by quality door companies such as ProVia, WeatherShield, Marvin, and Pella.
