Planning Your Minnesota Home Remodeling Project Realistically

Here in the Minneapolis area we’ve seen evidence that lots of homeowners are remodeling their homes.  Remodeling your home can be a whole lot of fun, but it’s important to stay realistic.

Having a plan is critical to a successful and satisfying home improvement project.

But there are some basic questions you need to ask yourself before you even begin planning.

  • What budget do you have to work with?
  • Are you clear on what you’re actually going to do to your home?

Take the time to plan out the whole remodel properly, before you ever start working on changing up things inside your home or on its exterior.  During the planning process it’s crucial that you get help from experienced, licensed home remodeling contractors such as Window Outfitters.  For example, as an exterior home improvement company we’re here to to help you find the right doors, windows and other enhancements for the outside of your home, and we can also to help you come up with a realistic budget that you’re going to stick with.

If your remodeling project is on the interior of your home, look for a contractor who can do the same for you with inside projects.

Budget Carefully for Your Home Remodeling Project

List every single change that you intend to make to your home to achieve the desired outcome. With your itemized list you can get proposals from reputable contractors and find out how much they will charge to do the work that you want done as well as how long it should take so that you can plan accordingly.  If you’re getting a home improvement loan, that contractor’s estimate will help when it’s time to talk with your banker.

Design Intelligently for Savings

After you come up with all the changes that you want to make on your home, you probably have an overall estimate that’s much more expensive than what you want to pay. Don’t panic, there are changes that you can make to bring that estimate in line with your actual budget. A good contractor should be able to suggest economical alternatives if their price is above your budget.

Talk with them about the changes that you want to make and how you might minimize them or whether there are more affordable alternatives. Perhaps instead of adding a massive addition on the back of your home to give you the storage space you need, you might be able to optimize some of your current living space to cut down on how much of an addition you actually need. Work with a qualified designer to help you cut out some of your more expensive enhancements, and to come up with a more realistic building plan.

Another thing you might consider is whether you can do your project in phases.  For example, if what you’d really like is a full-fledged indoor-outdoor living area, perhaps you should start with a transitional room, like creating a sunroom with a Glasswall porch enclosure from Mon-Ray.  Then next year you might add on the patio with the outdoor kitchen off that room.

Don’t have the money saved up?  Here are some ways that you can finance that project without all of the hassle.

Only after you’ve spent hours with a designer, with contractors and with your loved ones should you move ahead with a remodel plan. Make sure that you are happy with the changes and that they are going to meet all your needs. Then go ahead and commission the work, so that your home will receive the enhancements that you’ve always wanted to give it. Give us a call here at Window Outfitters today to learn more.
