What Type of Window is Right for Your Minneapolis or Suburban Twin Cities Home

Double Hung, Bow, Awning, fixed frame or another? We can help you select the perfect window for your home. DOUBLE HUNG windows are the most popular type of window. These are the windows with 2 sashes that simply slide up and down. Typically only the bottom sash will move, but older models will allow both top and bottom to slide. They come in countless materials and shapes, and will do the job every time.

The next most popular types of window is the CASEMENT window. This one opens and closes like a door, and swings on a hinge that can be mounted on any side of the casing. These windows typically have a better thermal seal because they are typically clamped shut when they close. They offer better air circulation because they can catch breezes and funnel them in a much larger opening than the double hung window can provide. Screens can be in, out, or in-between the panes of glass.

Another option for larger opening is the BAY WINDOW. This is a combination of 3 or more windows that allow a lot of light to come into the room. They can be flat, or bowed out depending on what the property owner likes, and they typically have 1 fixed pane in the middle; and to casement windows at either end. They are a very good choice for anyone who wants economical windows, and plenty of sun.

The BOW WINDOW is the same thing, only larger. They will come pre-made from the factory, and fit into one very large opening. They are usually arched, and can have 2 or more opening panes. Rare in homes, they are often seen in commercial

properties.

AWNING WINDOWS are windows that open out from the bottom, to provide an awning type cover for open windows. In reality, they are casement windows with the hinge at the top.

FIXED FRAME windows are windows that don’t open. Like the bow windows, they are usually used in commercial properties since they only serve to let the light in.

SKY LIGHTS are casement windows for the ceiling, and SLIDER WINDOWS are double hung’s turned sideways.
