Save on Heating in Minneapolis by Eliminating Drafts in Your Home

03feb04c3a14If this last winter was cold inside your home and the drafts were plentiful, then you want to know how you can stop the drafts and save on heating before next winter. You do not want to spend more than necessary on your monthly heating bill. Here are some ways to help you do just that.

Add Weather Stripping to Windows and Doors

Weather stripping is one of the simplest solutions out there when it comes to sealing your windows and doors. You just have to make sure you place it in the right area to seal it tight and keep out drafts and you’re ready to go. The stripping can come in kits so you’re able to do all of your windows and doors. Make sure to check any other cracks and crevices that might need to be sealed as well.

Prevent Air Loss Through the Fireplace

Fireplaces are one of the biggest areas that can let drafts in. You want to ensure that you check to make sure it is fully closed and that there are no cracks open that can let drafts in. (Hold a lit candle in the fireplace opening; if the flame flickers, there is an air leak.) You can add a plug, door or cover to keep the cold out, even if you found no cracks that let the air in. Just make sure these are removed before you light a fire again.

Curtains or Drapes Throughout Your Home Can Reduce Drapes

If you still feel drafty, check out some thicker curtains that are made to keep the cold out. They can provide an additional shield against the cold drafts that happen. If the windows have blinds, you’re still able to add this extra layer of protection.

Older Homes May Need Extra Insulation

If you’ve got an older home, adding extra insulation throughout the home can help to keep the heat in and the cold out. Most older homes were constructed with very inadequate insulation.  This is a job best left to professionals, however.

New Windows and Doors Might Be the Answer to Your Draft Problem

If you’ve done all the things above but haven’t been able to eliminate the drafts that you have throughout the home, then you’re going to want to check out new windows and doors. The windows and doors that you have in your home might not be the best that they can be, especially if they don’t fit well in their frames anymore.  Your old wood windows and doors most likely have warped, shrunk, or cracked, which means they aren’t doing their job at keeping out the elements. Have a professional Minneapolis replacement windows and doors company install new energy-efficient ones.  When you choose a reputable window contractor, you’ll get the job done right, and your drafts should be a thing of the past.

This should go without saying – keep your windows and doors closed!  Even new energy-efficient models can’t work when they’re not closed.  You let in more air through these two places when you keep them open for extended periods of time, so make sure to stay on top of it!

Check out what we here at Window Outfitters have to provide you with when it comes to making sure that you do not have a draft coming in your home.  We can help you improve indoor comfort through your home before next winter hits. You will be glad you called us.
