The Advantages and Disadvantages of Garden Windows

One of the more unique window styles many homeowners are selected today is the garden window.  A garden window (also called a greenhouse window) extends out into your yard, giving you more light and more to see.  In addition to more glass, garden windows often have shelving, which gives you increased decorating options.  They’re often installed in kitchens over the sink, but they can be used in just about any other room of the house.

Garden windows have many advantages, but there are drawbacks as well.  Since these windows extend out beyond the exterior wall of your house, they have greater exposure to the elements than flat windows.  For this reason, you’ll want to select a good quality window company if you’re choosing a garden window.    Look for sturdy construction and frame materials that won’t crack or chip.  And choosing energy-efficient and well-insulated construction is important as well.

The Advantages of Garden Windows

  • Garden windows bring more light into the room than a flat window, and if you choose one that will open, it can provide more fresh air as well. Even if it’s a small window the extra light and source of air can be refreshing.
  • You can create more shelf space in the window area for the room with a garden window.  Shelves permit space for small plants.  Imagine having a mini-greenhouse right in your own home!
  • Add more value and even beauty to the home when you put a garden window in. Since there are at least four panes of glass in a garden window, it makes the window more beautiful.
  • Although garden windows look complex, an experienced professional window contractor can install a garden window as easily as a regular window.

The Disadvantages of Garden Windows

  • Because they are so exposed to the sun and wind, garden windows offer little protection against any solar heat gain within the room.   If you’re choosing a garden window, look for a high quality one which offers good energy-efficiency.
  • Garden windows might create structural problems if they are not supported correctly. However, if you are hiring an experienced professional to put the window in, your installer should take this into account during installation.

No matter what window style you choose – garden windows, double-hung, casement, or specialty shapes, at Window Outfitters we offer only high-quality windows by companies such as Marvin and Unlimited and we have experienced, professional window installers who can get the job done right.   If you’re interested in learning more about garden windows, please give us a call.
