To Replace or Repair Your Windows: That is the Question

Do your windows need some attention?  A lot of Minnesota homeowners put off replacing their windows, due to expense and hassle. Many repairs, like fixing handles, locks, latches and perhaps sashes are easy enough to do on your own, but when do you know when the time for repair is done?

When to Repair
Generally, if the problem is mild, window repair is a better option. However, it can be difficult to figure out what “mild” is. Take a look at the following list, and if only one or two issues apply to your windows, repairing them is a safe bet.

  • Broken glass
  • Cracked glass
  • Stuck sashes
  • Water infiltration
  • Cracked, loose, rotten exterior trim
  • Rotting or broken muntins

The question of whether to do it yourself or not is another tough one. If you have rotten material or broken glass, it’s a better idea to call a professional in, rather than risking injury or causing further damage. However, there are ways to seal older windows to stop water from getting in and ways to un-stick sashes.

When to Replace
If your windows display most of the symptoms above, odds are, they’ve lived a good life, served you well, and it’s time to retire them in favor of upgrading to newer windows. These new models can save you money with higher energy efficiency, increase your home’s value, be much easier to use, and if you opted for UV protective glass, prevent fabric fading as well as reflecting heat during the summer. New windows may also last longer than your old ones, because modern materials are often more durable than wood.

Your windows are important in your every day life, so you must make the best decision for their care as possible. Replacing old windows may just be what your home needs to improve your and your family’s lives.

If you’re unsure whether simple repairs will take care of  your window problems or if it’s time for new ones, it’s a good idea to have a  window contractor take a look at your windows and get a professional opinion.
