Before you start painting, clean and sand the door lightly with a piece of fine sandpaper. A marine varnish is often the best choice because it provides a durable shine and resists the impact of strong sunlight, water, and other elements. If there are bare spots, add another coat of stain, but if the stain is still in good shape, add some varnish using narrow roller. After each coat, go over it with fine steel wool to prevent bumps and bubbles in the finish.
