Transform Your Twin Cities Home: Change Your Style with Energy-Efficient Replacement Windows

Often when we meet with homeowners here in the Twin Cities about replacing their windows, many are surprised to find out that they don’t have to choose the same style as their existing windows.  Knowing you can opt for a different look really opens up the possibilities.  Not only can different style windows be easier to operate but they can totally remake the appearance of the exterior of your home.

This is an important consideration for those who want to update the look of their homes.  Most older homes around the Minneapolis metro area have double-hung windows.  This traditional window style remains the most popular in the U.S., but casement windows are gaining in popularity.  Casements – along with glider or sliding windows – are generally easier to operate than double-hung windows, which might be a consideration for older homeowners seeking to make practical changes to their homes in light of aging in place.

A related point is that there is no rule that you must use all the same style windows throughout your home.  In fact, when you’e choosing your new replacement windows, it’s helpful to evaluate the use of a room in order to figure out which style window would be appropriate.  (For more detailed information, check out our previous blog post on suggested window styles for different rooms.)

And did you know that some window styles are more energy-efficient than others?  Of course, any fixed window (a window that does not open) is the most energy-efficient, but some styles perform better than others.  For example, casement windows generally are the most energy-efficient, while double-hung windows are the least. So if cutting down on energy use and heat loss are important to you, casements might be a better style for you.

One point we’d like to bring out is that if your home is in an historic district or you have some HOA restrictions as to window style, your choices may be limited.  But we specialize in windows for older and historic homes, so we can assist you in selecting windows that will meet the requirements of your area.  It may be that there are window styles that replicate the look of your existing windows but provide greater functionality and energy efficiency.

So if you’re shopping for replacement windows, you may want to think outside the box and consider different window styles.  We’re here to help you get the perfect window solution for you and your home.
