Trend Meets Function with These Home Siding Options: Stone

Trends in home design and home remodeling always come and go, but we find that often homeowners here in the Twin Cities like to know what’s trending. It may help them make up their minds about projects they’re considering for their homes, especially for the exterior.  Exterior remodeling serves a functional purpose, of course. Projects such as roofing and siding protect a home, but they do far more.  Appearance of a home from the street – what real estate pros refer to as ‘curb appeal’ matters.  And since siding accounts for the largest surface area on the outside of a home, that makes choosing a siding material very important.

There are some home trends that make sense and some that do not. Some are clearly overdone.  For example, shiplap siding may look great on the exterior of a home, but brought indoors and covering every inch of the interior wall space is a bit much. When you’re evaluating trends, be wary of anything outrageous or over-the-top. It will get old soon and then your home will look outdated.

When you’re considering doing something to the outside of your home in the Minneapolis area, consider the trends that are going to add more function to your home and benefit you overall, rather than those that are just being done just because they’re popular at the moment.  You want your home to stand out, but not in the wrong way.

Trending and Timeless: Stone Siding Options

Stone siding is definitely a look whose popularity has increased in recent years.  But it’s also a very traditional siding material that goes back centuries. But the trend now is that instead of having stone cover the entire exterior of a home, it’s being used as an accent.

But genuine stone has its drawbacks. It’s expensive, heavy, and requires a specialty contractor like a mason to install it.  Minnesota heat-and-thaw weather cycles can cause deterioration of mortar, which means it periodically needs to be redone.  If you like the look of stone, we have a great option for you.  We install Versetta Stone® by Boral®, a panelized product that doesn’t require special installation techniques. And because it comes in sheets, there is no mortar required, nothing to break down from moisture or temperature.  You get the look of real stone without the drawbacks.

Watch our blog for our next article on some of the other siding trends to be aware of.  In the meantime, if you’d like to talk with us about Versetta Stone® for your home, please give us a call.  (You can check out a few of the stone looks available from Boral by visiting our Pinterest board.)
