What Differentiates Low Quality and High Quality Vinyl Windows?

Vinyl is one of the most popular and economical choices for replacement windows.  Vinyl is thought of as the perfect material for any kind of weather. This is why it is used in windows all over the world, no matter what the weather conditions are.Vinyl can be easily manipulated into the shape and size you want, so a lot of people with custom homes choose this material.

Vinyl is a tough type of material, but this does not mean it does not have its downfalls as well. If you’re choosing vinyl for its economical cost, you should be aware that there are substantial differences between higher quality vinyl and cheaper windows.  Some window manufacturers  mix  vinyl with another material in order to get a cheaper material to make the windows from. The nicer qualities of vinyl can be compromised when this happens.

Durability and Safety

How do you now if you’re getting a quality product?  You want to look into the ratings on the windows when you’re searching for the best vinyl windows. If the window is high quality, then it was probably rated by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association or the American National Standards Institute, Inc. for their safety and durability checks. They set the toughest standards out there for windows, so you should know the window is the high quality they say it is. Lower quality windows are usually not certified by these places.

The Window Frame Color

Window frames often will discolor over time due to the ultraviolet rays within the sun. They will turn yellow from the sun if they were once white. If the window is high quality, then it is made using a tin compound or titanium dioxide that is able to brighten the window. These extras can even protect the window frame from the sun. If you cannot find the materials on the label, you should talk with your window contractor about what is inside the window frame. Tinting is a cheaper method to preserve the color in the window. This can be seen if there is a pale blue tint on the window frame.

Heat Standards

High-quality vinyl window frames can stand up to temperatures up in the 160-degree range and even higher.  Now Minneapolis summers don’t get that hot, but vinyl window frames definitely can withstand the summer temps we get in this area.  In hot weather, lower quality vinyl windows will soften and even lose their shape. This causes the windows to crack and sag.

Window Outfitters can install all types of high quality vinyl windows the right way. Some of the quality vinyl window lines we install include Hurd, Unlimited, and Lindsay, as well as vinyl-clad wood windows from WeatherShield. There are also others to choose from as well.  Are vinyl windows right for your Minneapolis area home?  Give us a call to find out.
