What Front Door Colors Do Real Estate Professionals Recommend?

We recently shared an article on the best front door colors for homeowners in the Minneapolis area.  Of course, aesthetics should be your first guide when choosing a colored front door.  You want something that will go with the overall look of your home’s exterior, and of course a color that appeals to you personally is important.   No matter how popular that green shade is, if it makes you cringe every time you pull up to your home, it’s not the right shade.

There are two ways to get a colored front door:  repaint the one you have, or order a prefinished colored door.  We highly suggest you opt for the second method, because if you paint it yourself, you’ll be touching it up and redoing it over and over.  Door companies we work with such as ProVia offer a wide range of colors in their entry and storm doors.

This front entry door is from ProVia, and its forest green glaze is hand applied.

Your Home Will Sell Faster and for a Higher Value with the Right Front Door Color

The front entry area – especially the front door – is the first place someone’s eyes are drawn to.  So the color of the door is important, because it sets the overall feel of the house.  A prospective buyer might just keep driving if the color doesn’t appeal to them.  Or the right color could convince them this is the perfect home.  This is called curb appeal, but a colored front door can do more than just make your home attractive.

Did you know that a colored front door can add value to your home? It used to be that paint colors might help a home sell faster but they didn’t really add to the value.   But times have changed.  A 2022 survey done by Zillow) the home listing site) indicated that potential home buyers paid attention to the color of the front door.

  • For those responding to the Zillow survey, black was the top choice.  In fact, a home with a black door might sell for nearly $6,500 more!  Black is a classic color and will never go out of style.  It’s especially appealing when the siding is white or a pale shade, because the contrast makes the home itself really pop.

But black might not work well on a home with a darker overall look, so what other colors are popular?  Colors inspired by nature get top marks, and those colors reflect an overall trend in color right now. These include:

  • Slate blue:  calming, peaceful, inviting.  Buyers might pay about $1,600 more for a home with this color front door.
  • Forest green:  deep green is very popular; in fact, among Houzz users (Houzz is a great place to find inspiration for home design), there has been a major jump in searches for doors this color in the past two years.
  • Navy blue:  This striking shade – like black – creates fantastic contrast, and it works well with just about any neutral siding color.
  • Mid-tone brown: another color drawn from nature, a door finished in a medium brown can remind buyers of real wood, and they’re willing to pay more for a home that has one.
  • White:  Gloss white works well against darker colored homes but is also great on a brick home.  Again, think contrast that draws the eye.
