Which Window Style is Right for Your Minneapolis Home?

A home without windows is something hard to imagine. These windows do a lot for the home – provide light, ventilation, and warmth. They can even perk up the look of your home. Learn about many options out there for you to take advantage of when choosing the best windows for your home.

  • Double-hung – A two paneled window that is able to slide either up or down, and can be opened from the bottom or top of the window. You’re able to clean these windows from the inside of your home since they tilt.
  • Single-hung – Similar to the double hung this type of window is fixed at the top.  Only the lower portion can slide up or down, and the sash or panel has to be cleaned from the outside.
  • Casement – A window that swings out and opens toward the outside of the home.
  • Picture – Very large window that is not able to be opened. The window is a frame for the view of the outdoors.  Picture windows are often combined with operable casement or double-hung windows to add ventilation.
  • Louver – Window that has horizontal, narrow strips of glass. These tend to be crank-operated for opening.  These windows are also known as jalousie windows.
  • Fixed – This window is not able to be opened; function is limited to just allowing light to enter into the room.  These are good choices for adding light in hard-to-reach places such as in a stairwell or over a door.
  • Skylight – A window placed in the roof that is able to bring in natural light from above.  Some skylights are fixed while others can be opened to allow air flow.
  • Bay and Bow – These windows provide more space in the room since they protrude away from the home. They are a combination of windows, usually with the center being a picture window.

The type of window is the next on the list once you’ve considered all of the options.

  • Wood – Common choice since they complement any traditional looking home and provide the possibilities of staining or painting to desired shade or color.  Wood windows can also be purchased with a low-maintenance cladding on the exterior.
  • Fiberglass – A durable choice for windows, energy-efficient and require little to no maintenance. They are an attractive choice since they can also be painted to desired colors.
  • Aluminum – If the home is a modern one, aluminum provides a minimalist profile on the home that maximizes views and sunlight. They are a durable selection.
  • Vinyl – Vinyl windows are low in maintenance, durable and energy-efficient.
