Why Fiberglass Entry Doors Are Great for Minneapolis Homes

It used to be that when someone went shopping for exterior doors (entry doors, patio doors, and storm doors), the typical door chosen would be a wood door for entry, vinyl for patio, and aluminum for storm doors.  But times have changed, and there are now alternatives for all three of these.  In this post we’d like to discuss entry doors, and why we believe fiberglass doors are preferable to real wood doors for homes in Minnesota, especially here in the Minneapolis metro.

Wood Entry Doors Take a Beating from Minnesota Weather

While genuine wood has an unmatched beauty, it doesn’t stand up well to Minnesota climate.  Minneapolis weather can be harsh, especially with hot, humid conditions in the summer and cold, snowy elements in the winter.  Then throw in seasonal storms, high winds, hail, etc. and you’ve got a whole host of things that can damage wood.  What does that mean for those who own wood entry doors?  Lots of maintenance, repairs, and replacement more frequently than another type of material.  Wood doors also can warp with the temperature and humidity changes, meaning they won’t fit as snugly in their opening anymore.  That results in heat (and cooling) loss as well as air and moisture infiltration.

Hail, snow and ice, wind-driven rain, exposure to direct sunlight, all mean the finish will break down and need reapplication.  You (or someone you pay) will be re-staining or re-painting that door on a regular basis.

The results?  You’ll be spending more of your free time on door maintenance. You may have a door that sticks or is difficult to lock.  Your home may be drafty.  None of these things is desirable, and the worst of it is you’ll likely be spending far more on heating and cooling bills than you could with a different door.  Plus as far as security, a wood door is more easily breached than a fiberglass or steel door.

Why We Recommend Fiberglass Entry Doors for Minneapolis Homes and Businesses

We understand the aesthetic appeal of genuine wood, and we realize that here in the Northland the natural look gets top marks.  But what if we told you that the look is available in a maintenance-free door that gives you the wood appearance but without the drawbacks of real wood?

We offer fiberglass entry doors from ProVia, like the gorgeous door shown here with matching sidelight and overhead transom windows.  The Signet 460 line of fiberglass doors have a texture and appearance that resembles real wood grain, and the variety of hand-applied glazes looks just like genuine stained wood.

BUT these doors are much more secure, more durable, and resist damage from our climate.  Fiberglass doors are very energy-efficient, and because fiberglass is made from natural materials like sand, they are considered environmentally friendly.

Doors like these from ProVia carry the EnergyStar certification as well, your guarantee you’re getting a door that meets or exceeds EPA standards for energy efficiency.  No more drafts, no more air leaks, no more moisture infiltation.  And lower heating and cooling bills!

All of these reasons (and more) combine to let you know why fiberglass doors from ProVia are our #1 recommendation when a prospective customer asks about replacing their entry doors. And we are proud to be a ProVia certified installer as well as Platinum Dealer for our area.
