As THE replacement window company for the Minneapolis area, we’re also proud to be one of the leading installers of energy-efficient exterior doors. And because of our experience, expertise, and reputation, people often ask our advice on brands and types of doors and windows. In this post we’d like to share with you why our top recommendation for entry doors is ProVia’s lines of fiberglass doors.
Why fiberglass for exterior doors? That’s a good question. People are more familiar with wood, steel, and vinyl. But we believe that for many reasons fiberglass doors – especially those manufactured by ProVia – are superior to other door materials for homes in the Twin Cities metro area.
Despite its natural beauty, wood isn’t a very good choice for an exterior door. When used on a home’s exterior, wood requires a lot of upkeep in terms of re-staining or repainting (and more) to keep it looking good. And then there is the initial cost. Wood and fiberglass doors are generally comparable in cost, with steel doors costing less than either, and vinyl doors being the least expensive. But you’ve got to add upkeep costs to wood doors, so in the long run a wood door will cost you more over its life span. And because wood can break down, warp, or shrink, the expected life of a wood door is far less than a fiberglass door.
But aren’t they less attractive than real wood doors? (We get this question often.) When we get a chance to show people who come to our Savage window and door showroom the hand-grained wood look doors made by ProVia, they are pleasantly surprised. In fact, it would be understandable if you looked at the door shown below and assumed it was a high quality genuine wood door and sidelight combo. The manufacturing process even incorporates material to give it a natural wood texture.
In fact, the door combination shown above is from ProVia’s Signet fiberglass line in Cinnamon and featuring the Cheyenne art glass option.
And what about energy efficiency? That’s where fiberglass outperforms wood doors. ProVia fiberglass doors in particular are highly energy efficient. Year after year ProVia has received the EnergyStar ‘Partner of the Year’ designation, which is your assurance that their doors are tops in terms of energy savings.
Hopefully we’ve already convinced you to check out ProVia’s lines of fiberglass entry doors. Now we’d like to tell you why we think you should have our Minneapolis window and door company install your new doors.
