Why Fiberglass Replacement Windows Are Perfect for Minneapolis Homes

In our last blog post we talked about why we don’t recommend you skimp on cost when you’re having replacement windows installed.  And we mentioned a variety of window frame materials and their relative cost. Fiberglass windows fall in the middle between wood and vinyl as far as price goes.  (There are other materials such as aluminum, the original replacement window material, but these three are the main options.)  We’re big fans of fiberglass windows for homes in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area.  And here are some reasons why.

Why We Recommend Fiberglass Windows

Fiberglass is a relative newcomer to the window frame industry, having hit the market just twenty years ago.  They were originally engineered to improve what were considered drawbacks to vinyl windows.  So if you’re considering vinyl, be aware that fiberglass is an upgrade. Yes, fiberglass windows will cost more, but we believe they’re worth it.

Yes, we do install vinyl windows. And we install genuine wood windows with maintenance-free clad exteriors. We believe in offering our customers choices, and that’s just one reason we have a number of manufacturers we work with. Not every window line is right for everybody, and we recognize at times that real wood windows are the right choice, especially for those who own historic homes or those with older homes whose traditional style they want to preserve.  We also understand that some homeowners want an economical window, and so we offer high quality vinyl windows as well.  But for the most part, fiberglass windows such as those we install from Marvin are our first suggestion.

  • Fiberglass can be crafted to resemble wood, but it has none of the maintenance needs – no regular refinishing to protect it from our elements, no decay due to moisture, no issues with deep, freezing cold and extreme heat.
  • Wood window frames can absorb water from rain and snow, leading to cracking and warping. That won’t happen with fiberglass.
  • Window frame materials as well as glass can expand and contract with temperature. That expansion is what helps them fit snugly in their frames.  The expansion rate of fiberglass is about equal to that of glass (vinyl can be as much as four times that of glass).

Homeowners will really appreciate the fact that fiberglass windows require virtually no upkeep other than occasionally washing, which you need to do with any type of window.  But you can cross off painting, staining, and re-caulking your windows on your annual exterior home maintenance list.
