Why We Recommend Fiberglass Replacement Windows for Twin Cities Homes

In a recent blog post we shared some reasons why we believe that homeowners in the Minneapolis metro area should consider fiberglass exterior doors when the time comes to replace the ones they have.  For many of the same reasons, we also highly recommend fiberglass replacement windows.  (To get some good basic background information, you can read our earlier post by clicking here.)

Why You Should Consider Fiberglass Replacement Windows

One of the first things you should take into account when you’re shopping for replacement windows is whether or not the type of window material you’re considering will stand up well to Twin Cities weather.  After all, windows are exposed to it 24/7 every day of the year.  You should evaluate window frame durability in terms of deep cold, humidity, heat, hail, and wind-driven rains.  Much of the year we get some sort of precipitation here in the Minneapolis area.  (Weather records show on average of 1 in 3 days gets rain, sleet, hail, or snow.)  So the effect of moisture on the exterior of a window frame is important.

And then there is stability in terms of heat and cold fluctuations.  During a Minnesota winter, this is a real issue, because we often have periods of deep freeze followed by warm-ups.  And many window frame materials don’t perform well under conditions like that.

Both of these factors are why we don’t recommend wood exterior frames for homes in the Twin Cities.  Our weather – both precipitation and temperature – is hard on wood. Cracks and warping are common results, and wood exterior window frames need lots of upkeep due to that.  Warped frames can mean air and moisture leaks as well, so your windows won’t fit as well in their openings and you’ll likely be wasting energy.

But the look of real wood windows has an appeal nothing else can match. Except fiberglass window frames.  We are proud to offer our customers fiberglass replacement windows from Marvin. These frames mimic the look of real wood but without the drawbacks. And in terms of moisture and temperature resistance, nothing beats fiberglass.
