Window Construction Basics

There are many styles of windows, as well as a variety of options, frame materials, and manufacturers, but there are some things about every window that are the same.  It’s important to understandthe basic anatomy of a window, so that when you’re choosing new windows for your home, you”ll understand just what is involved.  Here’s a basic window section, courtesy of the National Fenestration Ratings Council.  (The NFRC is the body responsible for rating window, door, and skylight products.  “Fenestration” is a building term meaning an opening.)

The segment shown at right is from a double-glazed vinyl window, but the parts shown would be substantially the same if the window were wood, fiberglass, aluminum, or composite.  “Glazing” is generally just window glass, although some specialty windows have lucite or another semi-transparent material instead.

When it comes time to choose a window, you’ll find that you have lots of options – number of glazings (window panes), gas filling, etc.  But the more you know about how windows are constructed, the better informed you’ll be.

If you’re shopping for windows but you’re still unsure of what would be the best solution for your home, call the window and door solution experts at Window Outfitters for a free consultation.
